William Archer, Review of 'The Importance of Being Earnest' (1895)

 

Introduction

William Archer (1856–1924) was a drama critic, author, and translator. He wrote for a number of London newspapers, and his interest in the work of Henrik Ibsen helped establish the Norwegian playwright in England and America. His collected criticism, A Theatre World, appeared in 1897. Here Archer remarks on the "instinct of the theatre," found in Oscar Wilde's plays.
