Introduction
Aphra Behn (c.1640-1689) was an English playwright and novelist of the Restoration period. She was one of the first professional woman writers, and her play The Rover (1667) is in Volume I of this anthology.
For some of her plays (notably The Dutch Lover and The Lucky Chance) Behn wrote prefaces that contain a number of interesting reflections on drama in general and on comedy in particular. The following excerpts are from the "Epistle to the Reader" that prefaces her 1673 play The Dutch Lover.
