Wayne C. Booth, “Point of View and the Control of Distance in Emma”
This article examines Austen’s use of narrative technique in shaping readers’ reactions to the character of Emma. Booth argues that Austen carefully manipulates point of view and dramatic irony so as to invite readers to judge Emma’s faults while simultaneously encouraging us to be fond of her. One of the unique strengths of Emma, according to Booth, is that Austen manages to keep these two seemingly contradictory elements in successful balance.
