Edward Copeland “Money” [from The Cambridge Companion to Jane Austen]

This essay looks closely at the role played by money in Austen’s work. Copeland translates for today’s readers the statements in the novels regarding income, as well as other markers of “rank, social aspirations and consumer power” that would have been more easily legible to her contemporaries.
