Sketch from Titus.jpg

Context

Henry Peacham's sketch of a scene from Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus is one of the few contemporary sources of visual information about early modern theatre costumes. Note that Titus (holding the spear) is wearing a Roman toga while Tamora, queen of the Goths, is in Elizabethan dress. The soldiers behind Titus are also dressed in Elizabethan gear. Aaron the Moor is represented as black, which may have been done with makeup or cloth.
